EXCLUSIVE: Sherrie Hewson reveals hopes of returning to Coronation Street as Maureen Webster, more than 30 years after her debut
Sherrie Hewson has shared that she’d love to make a comeback to Coronation Street, nearly 20 years after leaving the famous cobbles.
The former Loose Women star and Benidorm actress portrayed Maureen Webster in the ITV soap between 1993 and 1997, later reprising the role briefly in 2006.
Long-time viewers will recall Maureen as the four-times-married daughter of Maud Grimes (played by Elizabeth Bradley) and the owner of the corner shop from 1994 to 1997.
When she first arrived on the street in 1993, Maureen was a divorcee caring for her disabled mother, Maud. She took a job at Bettabuy, not realising the manager was none other than her former flame, Reg Holdsworth (Ken Morley).
Despite Maud’s ongoing disapproval of Reg, which stretched back to 1968, Maureen and Reg rekindled their romance and eventually tied the knot.
Reg bought the corner shop for the couple to manage together, but after just six months he returned to the supermarket business, leaving Maureen to carry on with Maud’s support.
The breakdown of Maureen’s second marriage started in 1995 when Reg was promoted to Lowestoft.
Once away from her, Reg slipped back into his old habits and had an affair with Yvonne Bannister (Clare Cathcart), who later became pregnant with his child.
Maureen ended the marriage and retained the shop, renaming it Maureen’s Mini Market.
In 1996, Maureen began a romance with Bill Webster (Peter Armitage), but after their split she rebounded by marrying Fred Elliott (John Savident). Soon realising her mistake, she left Fred and ran off to Germany with Bill, where the two later married.
Maureen’s last appearance on Coronation Street came in 2006, when she made a surprise Christmas return that exposed Bill’s affair with Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls).
However, the relationship soon fell apart once again, leading to another divorce, after which Maureen returned to Germany.
Speaking about the possibility of reprising the role, Sherrie told Reach PLC: “I’d love to go back to Corrie.”
“My friend Tony Maudsley from Benidorm is in the show, and we still chat almost every day. I don’t think my character would be linked to his, but I am Sally’s [Webster, now Metcalfe’s] former mother-in-law. I married Bill Webster, while she was married to Kevin Webster—so there’s definitely a connection.”
This comes just days after Sherrie’s Hollyoaks character, Martha Blake, met a brutal end in shocking scenes.
Martha’s storyline concluded when her son, serial killer Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield), turned against her. Believing she had “betrayed” him, he stabbed her in front of her grandchildren, Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) and Dodger Savage (Danny Mac).
