“She will face off with her longtime nemesis, Zoe Slater.”

Kim Medcalf is set to make her return to EastEnders as Sam Mitchell this Christmas. The 51-year-old actress will reprise her role as the strong-willed and scheming sister of Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) for a “short stint.”
She commented: “It’s such a joy to be asked back to EastEnders, especially during the festive season, when you know there will always be plenty of drama. I love playing Sam — she always stirs up trouble wherever she goes, but she also has a vulnerable side, which is wonderful to explore. It’s also fantastic to be back on set with the brilliant cast and to reconnect with both old friends and new faces.”
Since Sam left Walford in 2023 to start a new life in Spain, the Square has changed significantly — particularly with her rival and Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) murder accomplice, Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), now back on Albert Square.

The murder of the original Queen Victoria pub landlord, which marked EastEnders’ 20th anniversary in February 2005, involved Sam Mitchell, Zoe Slater, and the actual killer, Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman), who was also Den Watts’ wife.
The three women sought revenge against Den after he involved Zoe in a blackmail scheme and deceived Sam into having sex. They confronted him at the Queen Victoria pub, but the encounter quickly turned violent. Den attacked Chrissie, prompting Zoe to strike him on the back of the head with a doorstop, rendering him unconscious. Believing Den was dead, Zoe and Sam fled, only for Den to regain consciousness and grab Chrissie’s leg, which led her to bludgeon him with the doorstop, ultimately killing him.
Although Sam witnessed Chrissie committing the murder, Chrissie managed to frame Sam, who was falsely accused before fleeing the country while out on bail.
Chrissie’s deception didn’t last, however. She was eventually caught, admitted to killing Den, and was imprisoned in December 2005. She was granted early parole and released in September 2024.
As Sam and Zoe reunite for the first time in over twenty years, viewers will have to wait a few weeks to see whether they can move past their history or if Sam will seek revenge against Zoe.
Ben Wadey, EastEnders Executive Producer, shared his excitement about Kim Medcalf’s return: “I’m thrilled to welcome Kim Medcalf back to EastEnders for a short stint later this year. It’s no secret that wherever Sam Mitchell appears, drama follows. With her former accomplice Zoe Slater now back on the Square, only time will reveal whether the two can find forgiveness, or if old rivalries will flare up once again.”
