Research shows that many people over 45 have stopped picking up new skills, yet a large number are eager to explore emerging technologies such as AI.
The typical Brit stops actively learning by age 51, even though many are eager to understand new technologies like AI.
Research found that one in ten people aged 45 to 60 hadn’t learned a new skill in the past year, compared with 58% of Gen Z who say they pick up something new every week.
Despite this learning plateau, older generations remain keen to gain knowledge, with over a million expressing a desire to return to the classroom. About 47% showed interest in technology such as AI, while 31% were curious to explore new ideas.
The study was commissioned by Samsung UK to coincide with its Solve for Tomorrow competition — a free, curriculum-linked programme encouraging 11 to 18-year-olds to use technology to tackle real-world challenges.
Actor and presenter Larry Lamb helped launch the initiative by spending a day back at school at Wembley High Technology College, observing how creativity and innovation are being fostered in today’s students.
“I’ll be honest, I was genuinely surprised by how inspiring some of these young people are,” said Larry, known for EastEnders and Gavin and Stacey.
“I didn’t have access to programmes like Samsung Solve for Tomorrow when I was younger, and now, as an adult, I find myself wishing opportunities like this had been available to me.
“I began the day with a fixed idea of what young people do at school, but that completely changed when I saw the incredible impact they can have, not just on the world today, but on our future as well.”
“Programs like this give young people the chance to apply practical skills and make a real difference. Whether it’s your children, grandchildren, or anyone under 18 you know, I’d encourage you to get them involved to help shape the future.”
Soohyun Jessie Park, head of corporate social responsibility at Samsung UK, added: “Working with Larry on Solve for Tomorrow this year was extremely rewarding. Seeing him engage and collaborate with the students at Wembley High was fantastic. It was wonderful to see he left the experience with a deeper understanding of what children can learn in school, and how technology in the hands of young people can drive innovation and positive change for the future.”
