“EastEnders favourite Nina Wadia, known for playing Zainab Masood on Albert Square, is now looking ahead to her next project — and the north could be in her sights.”
EastEnders star Nina Wadia, beloved for her role as Zainab Masood on Albert Square, has revealed she would love to join rival soap Coronation Street. The actress believes she would have a fantastic time in Weatherfield.
Speaking about the idea of moving from the South to the North, Nina said: “I’d love to walk the cobbles. That would be so much fun.”
The former BBC soap star added: “When you start on a soap, you get the chance to develop your character in a workshop at the beginning. Then, because you’re living the character day-to-day, you discover even more about them.”
Nina officially left EastEnders in February 2013 after many years in Walford. Since then, she has taken on projects such as Strictly Come Dancing, though she was notably the first contestant voted out when she participated in 2021.
Now, Nina admits she’s feeling the pull to return to the soap world and wouldn’t turn down the chance if it arose. “I haven’t been offered any soap roles recently, but who knows what might happen?” she said.
“I know a few of the Coronation Street cast, but I wouldn’t want to pressure them to get me a part!” she added. Nina has also pursued other projects, including the emotional series Isolation Stories, which was filmed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nina added that she’s used to long working hours from her six years portraying the feisty Zainab Masood on EastEnders. While she’s not actively seeking a role on another soap, she said she’s willing to challenge herself for the right opportunity.
“Being on a soap is very demanding, but I love hard work. That’s what drives me,” she explained.
In recent years, Nina has taken on high-profile roles in shows such as The Sandman, The Outlaws, and Midsomer Murders, with more projects on the horizon. “I’ve got several projects lined up for next year, including my first ever video game,” she revealed.
Nina’s most recent acting role came in 2023, when she played Binta Prabhu in the BBC series Doctors before it was ultimately cancelled. Beyond television, she has also ventured into radio and theatre, making her panto debut in 2023 as Fairy Sugarsnap in Jack and the Beanstalk in York.
During her panto run, she surprised audiences by helping her niece get engaged during one of the shows. Reflecting on the moment, she told the BBC: “I felt so honoured to be part of my niece’s love story.”
