As one of the UK’s most accomplished actresses, Sally Lindsay has starred in a wide range of theatre productions and comedy series throughout her career, following her breakout role as Shelley Unwin on Coronation Street in 2001.
Although she left the iconic cobbles in 2006, Sally won “Best Actress” at the 2005 Inside Soap Awards for her performance.
After departing Coronation Street, her career continued to thrive, and she went on to secure multiple major roles. She played Lisa Johnson in Sky One’s comedy-drama Mount Pleasant from 2011 to 2017, and Alison Bailey in ITV’s police drama Scott and Bailey between 2011 and 2016.
One of her most recognisable roles was Kath Agnew in the BBC sitcom Still Open All Hours, which concluded in 2019.
More recently, she has taken on the lead role of Jean White in Channel 5’s hit series The Madame Blanc Mysteries, which she also co-created and produces. The show has been airing since 2019.
Before finding fame as an actress, Sally appeared on Top of the Pops as part of St Winifred’s School Choir, whose 1980 single There’s No One Quite Like Grandma reached number one in the UK charts, according to the Liverpool Echo.
She also tried her hand at stand-up comedy before landing her early acting roles. Working with Peter Kay, she appeared in Phoenix Nights and in the music video for the Comic Relief single “(Is This the Way to) Amarillo?”.
Sally also featured in the much-loved comedy The Royle Family, and in 2000—one year before joining Coronation Street—she appeared in an episode as Twiggy’s girlfriend.
Though she went on to become a staple on British television, Sally also returned to the stage after leaving Coronation Street. She has portrayed Marilyn Monroe in the musical Ella, Meet Marilyn and played Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing.
Beyond her work onscreen and onstage, Sally is married to Steve White, former drummer for The Style Council and the Paul Weller Band. The couple share twin sons, Victor and Louie, born in 2010.
She appeared on Through the Keyhole in December 2018, where it was revealed she lives in Heaton Mersey, Stockport. Speaking to the Radio Times, Sally discussed her family’s TV habits, saying: “Steve will watch nonsense about catching monsters in the deep. Our twin boys have their own telly, but we make them watch films with us on the weekend.”
Reflecting on ageing and how life has changed, she said: “Compared to the hassle you get as a young woman, you don’t worry about walking past a building site anymore, which is fabulous.
“A revolution is happening for women my age with hormone replacement therapy and the menopause. In my mum’s day, you just kept quiet and got on with it. Now, every woman I know around my age talks about it. We need these conversations so it’s easier for the next generation.”
Sally is set to return as Jean White for a special Christmas episode of The Madame Blanc Mysteries.
The 120-minute festive special sees Jean called in to authenticate a newly acquired museum artefact—only for events to take a dark turn when she discovers a live bomb hidden inside.
According to the official synopsis: “With just 90 minutes until detonation, the museum goes into lockdown, the security guard is found dead, and the clock begins to tick. Jean and the team must crack the code and defuse the bomb before it’s too late. This is Jean’s most dangerous mission yet—can she save the day?”
Announcing the news on Instagram, the show teased: “A little extra treat this morning—we can confirm that this Christmas, we’re heading back to Sainte Victoire for the very first feature-length episode of The Madame Blanc Mysteries. Jean White is back doing what she does best—and she’s just as excited as we are.”
