Friday’s episode of Coronation Street, now streaming on ITV X, featured some intense scenes.
Coronation Street fans were left heartbroken for Todd Grimshaw, played by Gareth Pierce, in Friday’s episode.
Spoilers ahead — Todd has become involved in an abusive and controlling relationship with his new partner, Theo Silverton, played by James Cartwright.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Theo has a history of manipulating his partners. His former boyfriend, Owen, confronted him at a nightclub, listing the ways Theo tried to control and gaslight him. Owen blamed the church and conversion therapy for shaping Theo’s toxic behaviour, explaining that the abuse became so severe he eventually had to escape. Owen has since moved on with a supportive partner.
Now, Theo has set his sights on Todd. Friday’s episode took a devastating turn as Theo pressured Todd into training for a half marathon, pushing him to run even when he struggled.
Things worsened when Theo brought out a full-length mirror, telling Todd it would allow him to monitor his physique and control what he ate. The situation escalated further when James Bailey turned up, hoping to support Todd with his running and training.
James innocently flirted with Todd while dropping off some fitness gear, which sparked jealousy in an irritated Theo, who was preparing a healthy lunch.
After James left, Theo announced he would no longer cook and accused Todd of having feelings for James before unleashing his anger. He forced Todd to look in the mirror and then smashed Todd’s head against it.
Todd was left terrified and bleeding as Theo attempted to gaslight him, insisting it was a clumsy accident and not his fault.
In a bizarre twist, Theo even tried to blame Dev Alahan for selling a faulty, flimsy mirror.
After returning from the hospital, where Todd remained silent about the incident, Theo finished preparing the lunch and served it.
Todd was alarmed to find the food cold, but Theo gaslit him again, forcing him to eat under his watchful, menacing gaze, warning: “Eat, eat it!”
Fans quickly took to Twitter (now X) to express concern over Todd and the intense scenes. One viewer wrote: “Who else fast-forwards all of Theo’s scenes? I can’t bear to watch how he’s treating Todd :/ #corrie.” Another said: “Today’s Todd and Theo scenes were so tough,” while a different fan added: “Am I the only one who presses FF when Todd and Theo are on? It breaks my heart to see Theo’s narcissism and Todd shrinking as a person.” Another simply commented: “It’s painfully uncomfortable to watch.”
