EastEnders actor Jake Wood has spoken about Max Branning’s landmark flash-forward episode.
EastEnders star Jake Wood has revealed that fans are “really going to love” the explosive storylines surrounding Max Branning ahead of the soap’s landmark episode.
The BBC One drama will dedicate its entire New Year’s Day broadcast to a flash-forward format, giving viewers a tantalising glimpse of the chaos set to hit in 2026.
The half-hour special will focus on Max Branning (Jake Wood) in 2027 — a full year ahead of the current timeline — as he faces serious trouble with far-reaching consequences for both himself and those closest to him.
Fans of EastEnders have already begun speculating about Max’s actions over the next year, with theories including a potential marriage.
With anticipation building for the New Year’s Day broadcast, Jake appeared on The One Show on Friday (November 28), talking about his character’s upcoming turmoil with hosts Alex Jones and Clara Amfo, according to OK!.
The 53-year-old actor explained: “I think it’s the first time EastEnders have tried anything like this — an entire episode set on one New Year’s Day.
“So, at the start of the new year, Max is in a lot of trouble, and there’s plenty of drama; those episodes are incredible. Then, suddenly on New Year’s Day, we jump to The Vic — but it’s not New Year’s Day 2026, it’s New Year’s Day 2027.
“We see Max, and it’s clear he’s had a hectic year, full of drama and major events.”
Jake added: “I think viewers are really going to enjoy it. There’s been so much speculation, and it’s such an interesting way to tell the story. Over the next year, we’ll gradually build up to what we’ve already seen.
“We have a full half-hour flash-forward episode, and honestly, it’s packed with questions.”
He also revealed that he and his fellow EastEnders cast members are still unaware of Max’s full storyline. Alex then asked, “So, what are the little clues?”
“Yes,” Jake replied. “We see Max in all sorts of trouble, with lots going on. It’s intriguing and a bit confusing.
“The speculation is already off the charts, and as a cast, we’re all guessing and trying to figure it out. I really don’t know what will happen over the year. It’s going to be fascinating.”
Jake Wood also confirmed that Max Branning is set to return to EastEnders on December 16.
