“A television icon was taken to hospital this week after a frightening health scare.”
A beloved soap star has received an outpouring of support from fans after sharing that she was rushed to hospital during a health scare. Actress Amanda Mealing has been a familiar face on TV for years and is best known for her role as consultant Connie Beauchamp in Casualty and Holby City.
Her career also includes roles in Grange Hill and a part in the 1994 hit film Four Weddings and a Funeral. In 2021, Amanda joined rival soap Coronation Street, where she also directed three episodes.
Recently, Amanda took to social media to share a frightening health episode. The TV star posted a photo of her eyes and told her followers that she “suddenly lost vision” earlier this week.
She wrote in the caption: “I suddenly lost vision in one eye, so I went to hospital yesterday morning… and by lunchtime I was on the operating table having my retina re-attached, repairs done to torn areas, and a gas bubble inserted (who knew?!).
“Now I have to spend a week lying face down (used to be familiar!) © And that was just Monday. If it weren’t for the incredible, tireless efforts of @karlcooper426 and @glynn.haywardaesthetics, I simply wouldn’t be here.
“You save my day, my a**, my dog, and my life every single day. There’s not enough time in eternity to thank you. And to you @zoweyb1, for bringing home the cyclops—thank you all for finding me.”
Amanda’s fellow actors and fans quickly flooded the comments to show their support. Angela Griffin, who played Fiona Middleton on Coronation Street, wrote: “Hun! Sending love.”
EastEnders star Bonnie Langford added: “Poor thing. Wishing you well.” Meanwhile, one fan commented: “So sorry this has happened to you. It must be very frightening! Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope your vision returns to normal.”
Another fan said: “Oh blimey! Well done for getting there so quickly. Here’s to a fast and successful recovery.” A third added: “Oh my goodness, wishing you a speedy recovery.”
Unfortunately, this isn’t Amanda’s first serious health scare. In 2002, she took a two-year break from her career after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She made a full recovery and eventually returned to work.
While coping with her own battle, Amanda learned that a close friend had also been diagnosed with breast cancer, and just a few months later, her sister-in-law received the same devastating news. The deaths of both women had a significant impact on Amanda’s mental health.
“There’s always survivor’s guilt. They both had lumpectomies, and their tumours were smaller than mine,” Amanda told the Mirror in 2023. “Of the three of us, I’m the one who shouldn’t be here.”
