Villains are taking over
Coronation Street has introduced a host of new characters over the past year — but an increasing number of fans feel that too many of them have come in with clear villainous agendas.
The Street has always thrived on drama, but recently Weatherfield has taken on a much darker edge, filled with shady newcomers and jaw-dropping storylines. For many viewers, it’s beginning to feel overwhelming.

Corrie villains roundup
Looking back over the past year, a clear pattern emerges: almost every new arrival has either revealed a dark side quickly or arrived with serious baggage.
Mick and Lou Michaelis stormed onto the Street, going on to kill PC Craig Tinker, stab Kit Green, and attack Gary Windass. Becky Swain shocked viewers by “returning from the dead” and kidnapping Carla Connor. Theo Silverton abused Todd, Carl Webster framed his sister Debbie over the Corriedale crash and tried to steal her money, while Megan Driscoll groomed Will.
Meanwhile, Maggie Driscoll murdered her husband, Will Driscoll attacked Daniel and left him for dead, and now Jodie has lied to Shona, stealing the story of a domestic abuse survivor and passing it off as her own.
It’s been relentless. With Jodie as the latest villain, fans have been quick to voice frustration at how unbalanced the show feels at the moment.

Coronation Street fans voice frustration over surge of villains
One viewer said: “So Coronation Street have introduced ANOTHER nasty character. When are we going to get someone nice? I always liked Corrie when dark storylines were balanced with something amusing, but now that doesn’t seem to happen.”
Another added: “I feel the same. I even commented on another post: ‘Can a person just visit without becoming a villain?’ The show has completely lost its balance.”
A third fan pointed out: “The worst part is that none of these villains have even been around for a year. First it was Mick, then Theo, then Carl — all within February to April. Then came Becky, Maggie, maybe Will or Megan, and now Jodie.”

Opinion: Coronation Street doesn’t need any more villains
It has reached the point where every new character announcement seems to promise a dark twist — at least, that’s how it plays out on screen.
Don’t get us wrong — a well-crafted soap villain is important. But with so many prowling the Street at once, it’s unrealistic and leaves one storyline after another weighed down by gloom, with very little room for joy or humour.
Introducing more light-hearted characters could help restore balance. Someone like Christina Boyd, who was a brilliant addition, could bring back that classic Corrie charm. And who doesn’t enjoy a nod to the show’s roots?
There was some hope Maggie Driscoll might be different. Introduced as a clever, strong-willed woman, she seemed set to be a refreshing presence. But that optimism didn’t last long, as she arrived with a murderous past and aided her son Will in covering up a near-fatal attack on Daniel Osbourne.
It’s time for a change. We need a newcomer who makes us laugh, provides a break from the darkness, and doesn’t drag a trail of skeletons behind them. Just once, let someone walk onto the cobbles and simply… be nice.
