Coronation Street icon Denise Black, best known as Denise Osbourne, has signed up for Waterloo Road.

Coronation Street star Denise Black has officially joined the cast of Waterloo Road. The 67-year-old actress is best remembered for her role as hairdresser Denise Osbourne on ITV’s long-running soap, most notably for her romance with Ken Barlow (William Roache) in the 1990s.
Denise first appeared on the cobbles in 1992 and stayed until 1997. Her relationship with Ken resulted in the birth of their son, Daniel Osbourne, but things fell apart when it was revealed she was having an affair with Brian Dunkley (Benny Young). This scandal led to her sudden exit from the show for ten years.
She made a brief comeback in 2007, when Denise reintroduced Ken to Daniel following the imprisonment of his adoptive daughter, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), for the murder of Charlie Stubbs. Although she attempted to reignite her romance with Ken, he ultimately chose to remain with Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride).
It wasn’t until 2016 that Daniel, now played by Rob Mallard, returned to the Street after Ken suffered a stroke — and he has remained a central character ever since.

Denise later returned once more, appearing alongside Daniel and last seen expressing her sympathy to Ken following Deirdre’s death.
After her time on the cobbles, she went on to join ITV’s Emmerdale, where she played Joanie Dingle — the adoptive grandmother of Amy Wyatt’s son Kyle — from 2013 until 2017.
Joanie’s storyline saw her become romantically involved with Zak Dingle (Steve Halliwell), eventually marrying him, but her journey ended in heartbreak when she died of a heart attack in January 2017, according to The Mirror.
Now, Denise has swapped soaps for drama, stepping into the cast of the BBC’s revived school series Waterloo Road, which returned in 2023 after almost a decade off air. In episode six of the current series, she plays the grandmother of Noel McManus, a character portrayed by Liam Scholes.

In powerful upcoming scenes, Denise’s new character, Mo McManus, becomes caught up in a tense police standoff.
Waterloo Road first aired on the BBC in 2007 and went on to launch the careers of stars including Hollyoaks actress Chelsee Healey, former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Adam Thomas, and Katie McGlynn. Future household names such as Louis Tomlinson, Jodie Comer, and Jack O’Connell also appeared as pupils at the troubled Manchester school before rising to international fame.
Across its original nine seasons, the drama explored gritty and emotional storylines covering issues like teenage pregnancy, murder, and substance abuse. Its cast featured familiar faces such as ex-EastEnders star Jill Halfpenny as drama teacher Izzie Redpath, Loose Women’s Denise Welch as well-meaning French teacher Steph Haydock, and Silent Witness actress Amanda Burton as headteacher Karen Fisher.
The show was brought back in 2023 after finding a fresh audience on streaming platforms, and producers have since admitted the revival has performed far beyond their expectations.

Cameron Roach, the show’s executive producer, said: “When the BBC first commissioned the reboot, we hoped it might last for a few seasons. To now be renewed for further series — bringing the total to seventy hours of drama since the relaunch — is an incredible milestone and a testament to the amazing creative teams both on and off screen.
Alongside championing new talent, the show is also building a strong reputation for attracting top comedy names, with Jon Richardson joining the cast this season. As a team, we’re hugely proud that such a distinctly British drama has proved to be such a lasting success for the BBC and continues to capture the interest of new generations of viewers.”
Meanwhile, Coronation Street continues tonight at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
