Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks has hinted at what’s to come for viewers of the ITV soap.
Coronation Street is gearing up for explosive storylines, according to ITV soap boss Kate Brooks.
Kate, who joined Coronation Street in 2024, has promised “loads of twists,” first-time moments, and deeply emotional scenes set to unfold over the coming months on the cobbles.
Speaking at a Corrie press event on Friday, Kate revealed what’s ahead for Todd Grimshaw as his troubling relationship with Theo Silverton takes a darker turn.
The producer also teased more drama between fan favourites Lisa Swain and Carla Connor, after Lisa’s wife Becky Swain — presumed dead — made a shocking return four years after disappearing and living in hiding.
Elsewhere, Kate shared that viewers can expect uplifting moments for Debbie Webster amid her dementia diagnosis, reassuring fans that the character still has “ages” left on the ITV soap.
Here’s a look at what’s coming up on Coronation Street…
Kate explained:
“Fundamentally, this is a story about domestic abuse within a same-sex relationship. It’s a theme that’s been explored in soaps before, but I honestly can’t recall a time when it’s been portrayed between two members of the same sex.
“It felt important to shine a light on this issue, as it’s actually quite common in same-sex relationships. We’ve been working very closely with the charity Galop, and some of the statistics they’ve shared are really shocking.
“For example, around 55% of people in same-sex relationships have experienced abuse from a partner, ex-partner, or even a family member — which shows just how widespread the issue is.
“We wanted to explore this through a character like Todd — someone audiences know and love. He’s funny, a bit sly, cheeky, and doesn’t always follow the rules. His moral compass can be a little off. Then we see what happens when someone like Theo, who completely bulldozes his way into Todd’s life, comes along.”
“We’re going to gradually see Todd open up and reveal who he truly is. His vulnerability will become increasingly clear as he tries to navigate this relationship with a man he genuinely loves.”
Kate explained:
“But this man is abusive — he’s violent, he’s controlling. He uses all sorts of tactics to keep Todd constantly second-guessing himself and questioning his own worth. Todd begins to wonder, ‘Am I good enough? Is it my fault?’ And that’s where the red flags really start to appear.”
Kate added: “We’ve still got quite a journey ahead for these two. As I’ve said, there are some very dark episodes coming up — but they’re also important, raw, and incredibly authentic.
“We’ve experimented a bit with the show’s format to tell these stories. I was reviewing one of the upcoming episodes this morning, and it’s just brilliant — really powerful and completely focused on their relationship. I genuinely don’t think we’ve ever done anything quite like it before.
“In fact, I don’t think any soap has told a story in this way or this format. The impact is remarkable — when I watched it, I was genuinely stunned. I had to rewatch it just to process what I’d seen, because it’s that powerful and emotional.”
Kate continued:
“The thing Becky does best is remind Lisa of the life they once shared. They were together for a long time, they have a child together — there’s a deep history and love between them that can’t just be erased.
“Of course, we’re all really happy for Carla and Lisa, but that past connection is impossible to ignore. It’s been fascinating to watch people’s reactions online and see how audiences are interpreting the story.
“What I can say is that Carla and Lisa are a fantastic love story — they make a brilliant soap couple. The journey they’re about to go on, as they deal with this woman who’s suddenly dropped back into their lives like a bomb, is going to be intense.
“It’s especially interesting to see how Carla — who’s bold, feisty, and doesn’t tolerate any nonsense — copes with having this woman sitting calmly at her kitchen island, drinking tea. She’s having to hold herself back from doing anything rash, and honestly, I’m proud of her for showing such maturity in that situation.
“But of course, that kind of restraint and understanding can only last so long before someone eventually snaps. So yes, there’s a lot more drama to come. It’s an incredibly exciting storyline — and Becky is not someone you want to cross. She’s clever, manipulative, and determined to get her family back. After all, she managed to stay ‘dead’ for four years.”
Kate continued:
“She knows exactly what she’s doing — she’s manipulative and skilled at lying her way out of situations. She’s also taking full advantage of the fact that Lisa is still struggling to process everything. What Becky’s offering is a glimpse of the past — the life they once shared together.
“So yes, there’s so much more to come. There are plenty of twists, turns, and those moments where you’ll be watching and thinking, ‘Oh my God!’ But overall, it’s a really exciting, enjoyable ride.”
Kate added: “There’s lots of exciting stuff ahead. Becky’s a real badass — she’s clever and capable of a lot.
“The audience will soon discover that she’s not quite the innocent or heroic figure she’s been pretending to be. That truth will start to come out on screen fairly soon.
“It’ll take a little longer for the rest of Weatherfield to see her true colours and understand what she’s capable of. Carla, of course, already has her suspicions — and we’ll soon see those suspicions fully confirmed. And let’s just say, Carla’s absolutely right to be wary of this woman.”
“We absolutely love Debbie — she’s brilliant, funny, and full of life and joy. There are so many storylines developing around her that don’t revolve solely around her dementia.”
Kate added:
“For Debbie, she’s really enjoying life right now — living it to the fullest and making the most of every moment. She’s currently planning her big wedding with Ronnie, which is set to take place sometime soon, towards the end of the year. It’s going to be a truly gorgeous, joyful celebration.
“And of course, it’s very Debbie-like in every way — full of her lovable, slightly eccentric energy. We’ll also see the debut of the dementia choir, something Debbie’s been incredibly passionate and involved in.
“She’s focusing on what matters most to her — enjoying the time she has, celebrating her love for Ronnie, and doing her best to bring her family back together. She’s desperate to see her brothers united again.
“At the same time, she’s juggling all of this while continuing to run a successful business. This storyline is still in its early stages, and while there are moments where she forgets things, she’s learning to live with it.
“She’s still very much living her life — she’s not just a person with dementia. She’s Debbie Webster. She’s not defined by her diagnosis, and neither are her storylines. For now, we’re simply enjoying Debbie being Debbie.”
