Emmerdale reveals John Sugden’s return date — and it’s not a Coronation Street crossover

John Sugden has been absent from Emmerdale for a month, but viewers are confident they know the date the killer will reappear.

Emmerdale might see the return of killer John Sugden sooner than viewers expect.

The villain, played by Oliver Farnworth, was last spotted on the ITV soap in September, after fleeing the village once his reign of terror was revealed.

The former army medic had murdered Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) and later kidnapped Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), holding him in an underground bunker at his old family home.

With many determined to make John face justice for his crimes, he managed a dramatic escape. By blackmailing Caleb Miligan (William Ash), John successfully fled the Dales in the back of a lorry and relocated abroad.

Since then, there have been no updates on John or his location, but Nate’s father Cain (Jeff Hordley) has left the village in an attempt to track him down.

In September, fans spotted a wanted poster for John at the police station on rival soap Coronation Street, ahead of the historic crossover episode scheduled for early next year.

While some viewers believe John might return during the ‘Corriedale’ crossover, others think his comeback could happen much sooner. On an Emmerdale Facebook fan page, one user asked:
“Is that it for John then? Will he be coming back to face the consequences?”

Other fans quickly joined the conversation, sharing their opinions. One commented: “I reckon he’ll be back by Christmas.” Another agreed, adding: “Yeah, I think Christmas too.” A third fan said: “I don’t think it will be during the crossover.”

The crossover between Coronation Street and Emmerdale was confirmed earlier this year and will feature the two soaps coming together for a one-off, hour-long special, marking a first in British soap history.

Corriedale is set to air on ITV, STV, ITVX, and YouTube in early 2026 and will kick off the new soap power hour schedule, featuring 30-minute episodes of each show every weekday — Emmerdale at 8 pm, followed by Coronation Street at 8:30 pm.

Although filming is in progress, the details of the stunt and the characters involved are being kept under wraps for now.
