Ex-Corrie star Beverley Callard opened up emotionally, revealing that the wait for her breast cancer surgery is tougher than the procedure itself.

Former Coronation Street star Beverley Callard, best known for playing the infamous Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald, shared an emotional update on Thursday as she continues her fight against breast cancer. She revealed that she is due to undergo a “big operation” the next day – though, she admitted, the surgery itself isn’t the hardest part.

The 68-year-old actress first spoke about her breast cancer diagnosis on Ireland’s Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty, assuring fans that she was staying “positive and strong.” In a later update, she candidly admitted that she was forcing herself to eat amid the stress.

Beverley also revealed that she’s keeping busy by constantly tidying her home as a way to distract herself from the impending procedure. She explained that lymph nodes will be removed as a precaution, to ensure the cancer has not spread.

The star, who has been keeping fans updated, shared on social media: “I went to the hospital, and they wanted to discuss the lymph nodes and glands.

“They’re fairly confident the cancer hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes, but they’ll be removing two during my operation on Friday just to be sure. It’s quite a big procedure, but I completely trust the team,” reported the Mirror.

Beverley added: “I have to say, it’s the Norwich and Norfolk Hospital – all NHS, of course – and they are absolutely amazing. They spent a lot of time with me, as well as every other patient.”

“What’s wonderful is being able to sit and talk with others who are going through the same thing, and some are in far tougher situations than me. I feel so lucky – the world is full of incredibly strong women,” she said.

Beverley also revealed that the hardest part wasn’t the surgery itself, but the lead-up. “The waiting is the worst. I’ve been cleaning the house constantly so I don’t have time to dwell. Just one more day until the operation.”

She added: “I’m feeling strong and positive. If any of you are going through this too, let me know how you’re feeling – your stories mean so much to me.”

The actress, who has recently taken on a new role in the iconic Irish soap Fair City, disclosed earlier this month that her breast cancer was caught at an early stage. She explained that she was inspired to speak openly about her health battle by “strong, feisty women” and confirmed that she will need radiotherapy as part of her treatment.

Tragically, this isn’t the first time Beverley Callard has faced cancer. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer at just 32 – but as she defiantly told her supporters, she “beat it” then and is determined to do so again.

“I had a hysterectomy and recovered completely, so I know I can get through this. I’m just a bit scared now, vanity-wise. I worry about how I’ll look, about hair loss, and things like that,” she admitted.

Beverley first rose to fame on Coronation Street in 1989, playing Jim Donaldson’s long-suffering wife. She left the soap in 2020 after an impressive thirty-year tenure, explaining at the time that she wanted to explore different roles and challenge the ‘ageism’ prevalent in the industry.
