“Fans are convinced they know the identity of the lonely prisoner Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper has been writing to lately.”
Coronation Street icon Roy Cropper’s mysterious prison pen pal has reportedly been “figured out” by fans.
The beloved character, played by David Neilson, first appeared in 1995 as the neighbor of Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) in a block of flats—and he quickly became a fan favorite.
During his 30-year tenure on the long-running soap, the café owner has been at the center of numerous major storylines. Most notably, his marriage to Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh). The couple, who got together in the late 1990s, became one of TV’s most cherished and enduring duos.
Roy has also gained a reputation for mentoring troubled youngsters over the years, including his niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) and former resident Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly).
However, this week on the soap, Roy left Nina puzzled when he became fixated on the postman, nervously waiting for a delivery.
In Wednesday’s episode (November 19), a confused Nina pressed him for answers, assuming he might be expecting a letter from a hospital or test results.
Roy then revealed the truth: he had joined an organization that connects him with prisoners, and he has been corresponding with one of them. However, when pressed about the identity of his pen pal, Roy declined to give any further details.
Now, fans believe they have already “figured out” who Roy’s prison pen pal is. One person rushed to a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, asking: “So who is Roy writing to then?”
Another fan suggested it could be Becky McDonald, writing: “Could it be Becky McDonald?” A third agreed, saying: “Good idea, she might be in prison since leaving.” Someone else added: “I was thinking the same—I’d love that.”
Becky first appeared on the cobbles in 2006 and was central to several major storylines, from her marriage to Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) to enduring two heartbreaking miscarriages and her wish to adopt a child.
In 2012, actress Katherine Kelly left the soap after six years, leaving fans devastated. Becky departed for a new life in Barbados following a tumultuous romance and marriage with Steve.
