Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent has been heartbroken by the death of her grandmother in October 2024, admitting that “nothing will ever hurt me as much as this.”
TV favourite Brooke Vincent, who spent 15 years on Coronation Street, became emotional as she opened up about a heartbreaking family loss.
The actress — best known for portraying Sophie Webster on the ITV soap between 2004 and 2019 — revealed she has been struggling with the death of her much-loved grandmother, who passed away in October 2024.
Brooke, now 32, shared that she had an incredibly close relationship with her nan, and her death left the family feeling as though their “entire world had been flipped upside down.” More than a year later, Brooke said she is still learning to cope with the grief, though she is slowly finding ways to move forward.
Speaking on the Live, Laugh, Luke podcast, she explained:
“I feel like I’m finally at a point where I can talk about it without feeling like someone is punching me in the throat.
“For the longest time, even mentioning it felt like a blow to the throat. Grief just hits you at the most unexpected moments,” she told the Liverpool Echo.
“I’m really struggling with it. My nana would probably be proud of me, but I don’t feel like I’m able to take any comfort from that right now.
“When you lose someone who means that much, you just think, ‘Nothing else matters,’ because nothing will ever hurt as deeply as this.”
Brooke’s grandmother, Joan, passed away on October 5 last year. The former Coronation Street star shared heartfelt throwback photos on Instagram at the time, including one celebrating Joan and her husband’s 50th wedding anniversary. She also thanked friends and family for surrounding her with support during such a heartbreaking time.
The actress revealed that her two young children — Mex, six, and Monroe, four — whom she shares with former footballer Kean Bryan, helped give her purpose and kept her from falling too far into her grief.
She explained: “It’s incredibly tough. Thankfully, I had the boys. I couldn’t just stay in bed and cry — I had to get up, take them to school, and put on a brave face.”
“But what I would do is, if I was home alone, I’d put on my nana’s favourite song, sit with my memories of her, and let myself cry it out.
“I wanted to reach a point where, whether I’m out having a drink or completely sober, I can hear her song without feeling that awful tightness in my throat.”
At this point in the interview, Brooke became visibly emotional and broke down as she added: “You don’t realise how precious it all is until they’re gone.” She also admitted that she actually “likes a good cry.”
Brooke then addressed the ongoing rumours about her returning to Coronation Street after a six-year break from the show.
When asked directly about “coming back to Corrie,” she replied: “Honestly, I don’t know when I’ll return. That’s the truth. I’ve been around the cast a lot recently — they’re probably thinking, ‘Will you just go home already?’”
“But I worked there for 16 years, and stepping back into that building feels like walking into my own house. I saw all the sound guys, the makeup team — it felt like I’d never left.
“So I’d never rule it out. I’d love to pop back one day.”
