Coronation Street actress Sydney Martin, who plays Betsy Swain, has secured a film role away from the ITV soap.
Coronation Street viewers were thrilled for Betsy Swain actress Sydney Martin on Tuesday after she shared some exciting news.
The 24-year-old star, who has portrayed Betsy since 2024, took to Instagram on 17 February to announce that she has secured a new movie role away from the popular ITV soap.
In a joint post with writer and director Georgia Leigh-Taylor, Georgia wrote: “CASTING ANNOUNCEMENT.
“I’m sooooo excited to reveal that the incredible @sydneymartin._ and the talented @is.abellesmith will be taking on the roles of Mel and Ashley in my upcoming short film, Favourite.
“After graduating from the same drama school, Sydney and Izzy have both been working professionally in television since 2024, building impressive careers, tackling powerful storylines, and receiving well-earned recognition.”
“Favourite is a dual-timeline drama that follows best friends Mel and Ashley during their teenage years and later as adults. Sydney and Izzy will portray the pair in the film’s past timeline, which is set in 2012.
“I feel so incredibly fortunate with this casting — not only are they both exceptionally talented performers, but they are also best friends in real life, which adds an extra level of authenticity to the story. I’m really looking forward to seeing their chemistry come to life on screen.”
Sydney will star alongside fellow actress Isabelle Smith, who currently plays Frankie Osborne in Hollyoaks and previously portrayed Sonya in Coronation Street, in the exciting new project.
Reacting in the comments section, one fan wrote: “This is going to be amazing! I can’t wait to see it!” Another added: “Wow, this is huge! Congratulations!” A third commented: “So excited to watch it — the two of them together is a dream!” while another supporter gushed: “You’re shining, Sydney,” followed by star emojis.
Responding to the casting news herself, Sydney wrote: “So excited to work with you,” alongside a heart emoji.
The announcement comes as her Coronation Street character, Betsy, is currently at the centre of a major whodunnit storyline on the cobbles.
In Monday’s dramatic flashforward episode, viewers watched as Betsy was questioned by police after discovering a dead body.
When the detective restarted the recording, it was revealed that the interview is actually taking place on a date in April.
The episode switched between present-day scenes and the day of the murder, ultimately concluding with the shock reveal of five possible victims.
