As a surprising romance develops for Coronation Street’s Daniel Osbourne, it’s clear that actor Rob Mallard has also experienced a rollercoaster love life.
Coronation Street’s Rob Mallard is a fan-favourite, but the actor’s romantic life has been almost as eventful as his on-screen storylines.
Rob joined the ITV soap in 2016 as Daniel Osbourne, the son of the iconic Ken Barlow (William Roache). Over the years, Daniel has experienced plenty of romantic drama on the cobbles. Currently, he’s enamoured with secret predator Megan (Beth Nixon), who is grooming young Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale).
In Friday’s episode (December 4), after landing a job at Weatherfield High, Megan and Daniel shared their first kiss, with Daniel making it clear he wants their relationship to be more than just friendship.
Off-screen, Rob’s love life has also been eventful, including a “difficult” breakup with a Coronation Street legend.
Rob’s relationship with a Coronation Street icon
Rob publicly came out as gay in a 2017 interview with Gay Times. He had first come out to his family at 17 and explained that he “never planned to keep [his sexuality] a secret.”
After joining the ITV soap in 2016, Rob began dating fellow actor Daniel Brocklebank, who has played Weatherfield vicar Billy Mayhew since 2014.
The couple went public with their relationship when Rob won the British Soap Award for Best Newcomer in 2017. In his acceptance speech, he gushed: “Even though this is amazing, Dan, you’re the best thing I’ve ever taken home.”
What led to Rob and Daniel’s split?
Just a few months later, Rob and Daniel ended their relationship, citing the pressures of working together while being a couple.
A source told The Sun in July 2017: “It was a lot of pressure for both of them to be on the same show and in a relationship, and in the end, something had to give. They decided to split a couple of weeks ago, but they remain good friends and hope to stay that way.”
Rob later dated Ben Perryman, but their romance ended after six months in 2019. A spokesperson for Rob told The Sun: “Rob and Ben have parted ways. It was a mutual decision, and both would appreciate privacy regarding this personal matter.”
Rob’s current relationship
By June 2023, Rob went public with his new boyfriend, Matthew Martin, at the British Soap Awards. The actor posted a photo of the couple on the red carpet, captioning it: “British Soap Awards 2023 with @mattmarcm ❤️.”
Matthew, who is also an actor, appeared on Coronation Street earlier this year, playing a police officer who arrested Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) during a dramatic episode.
Back in February, Matthew shared his excitement on Instagram about his Weatherfield appearance. Posing with Rob, he wrote: “Ey mam! I’m on the telly! Quite surreal being called in last minute to play a policeman arresting Cassie Plummer. Huge thanks to @mossy737 for the chance to work on the iconic @coronationstreet and to my lad @rob.mallard for all the support and guidance.”
