Coronation Street’s Billy Mayhew is set to depart Weatherfield in the new year, and actor Daniel Brocklebank has already secured an entirely new role outside of the ITV soap.
Daniel Brocklebank has revealed details about his new role following the filming of his final Coronation Street scenes.
The 45-year-old actor has portrayed Weatherfield vicar Billy Mayhew since 2014, but it was confirmed earlier this year that his character would be written out of the ITV soap.
Speaking on Loose Women on Tuesday (November 26), he confirmed that his final scenes will air “sometime in January” and discussed his new project.
Daniel told the panel: “I left Corrie at quarter to one on Tuesday afternoon, and by half past one I was at a theatre in Manchester rehearsing Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein.”
“It’s the 10th anniversary show, and I’ll be playing Young Frankenstein. I’m taking over from the brilliant Ore Oduba.”
Speaking earlier to The Mirror, Daniel recalled being called into the production office in June and receiving the news.
“They said it was purely storyline-driven, as is often the case,” he explained. “It felt completely right, so I took it philosophically. At the end of the day, it’s just a job, and no character is bigger than the show.”
“We only receive contracts for a year at a time, and I don’t think anyone in their right mind expects to stay forever, as that can set you up for disappointment.
“Shows change over time, and new producers often want to introduce new characters while writing out those they feel have run their course — that’s just the way it goes.”
Daniel’s exit was confirmed earlier this year, with producers revealing that his character will face challenges “tested in ways he never imagined” in the coming months, ultimately leading to his departure in a tightly guarded storyline.
At the time, he said: “I’ve been working on Corrie for a quarter of my life. I’ve loved every moment in that building and have always looked forward to going to work.
“I adore everyone who works on this show, and while I’m sad to be leaving, I’m equally excited to see what the future holds.”
Late last year, viewers saw Billy lose his husband, Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), to motor neurone disease. It has not yet been revealed how Daniel and his character Billy will exit the show, or whether Billy will be killed off.
