Coronation Street’s Sue Devaney is a beloved cast member, but the actress previously shaved her head for a television role.
Known for her striking style and iconic hair as Debbie Webster on Coronation Street, actress Sue Devaney looks entirely different with a shaved head.
Sue first joined the long-running ITV soap in 1984 as Debbie, Kevin’s (Michael Le Vell) sister. She left after a year but returned to the cobbles in 2019.
Over time, Debbie has become a beloved character among fans. However, the past year has been particularly tough for the popular businesswoman on the street. Alongside her brother Kevin receiving a cancer diagnosis last year, Debbie herself was diagnosed with young-onset vascular dementia, turning her world upside down.
Additionally, this month, Debbie ended up in prison after confessing to dangerous driving that led to the death of local vicar Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) in last month’s dramatic Coronation Street episode, according to the Mirror.
However, Debbie is actually taking the blame for Carl (Jonathan Howard), her secret son, who was conceived following a one-night stand when she was 17.
Raised believing that Debbie was his sister, deceitful Carl is now enraged by her secret and is taking advantage of her for money, all while secretly plotting to ruin her cherished Chariot Square Hotel.
As for actress Sue Devaney, she has enjoyed a long career in the industry and is highly experienced in television work. She has appeared in a wide range of popular TV shows, including The Bill, The Royal, Heartbeat, Casualty, Shameless, Common As Muck, and the children’s drama Jonny Briggs.
However, it was her role in The Real Eddy English that demanded a striking transformation from Sue. In 1989, she appeared in the Channel 4 drama as a skinhead character named Mad B**tard.
Sue recently opened up about filming the show and the lengths she went to for the role. Speaking to Shaz Ighodaro, she said: “I played a skinhead gravedigger called Mad B**tard who lived on an allotment. I had to shave all my hair off. Since she was a gravedigger, I also had to cut my nails very short and put dirt under them and things like that.”
