EastEnders fans are wishing for the return of a Walford favourite 18 years after their debut.
Former EastEnders star Nitin Ganatra has hinted that Walford favourite Masood Ahmed could be making a comeback, six years after the character departed the Square.
Nitin famously worked alongside Nina Wadia, who portrayed his on-screen wife Zainab Masood, with the pair embracing the chance to play a non-stereotypical Muslim couple filled with both humour and drama.
Masood first arrived in Albert Square in October 2007. After his marriage fell apart, he went on to have romantic ties with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson), Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and Carmel Kazemi (Bonnie Langford), building quite the reputation in Walford.
Life wasn’t always easy for Masood, who struggled to come to terms with his son Syed’s (Marc Elliott) sexuality after he fell for Christian Clarke (John Partridge). The character also faced challenges with alcohol addiction and frequently found himself in financial difficulties.
In 2019, Masood decided to start afresh, moving to Australia with his youngest son, Kamil. Since then, he has remained a beloved figure in Albert Square, and fans would surely welcome his return with open arms, according to OK!.
While promoting his new film Christmas Karma, Nitin Ganatra reflected on his time on EastEnders, noting the strong public interest in seeing the much-loved character return.
“With EastEnders, everyone asks me if I would come back every day—I’m not even joking,” Nitin told Bang Showbiz
“I’m not exaggerating—three to four times a day, whether from people on the street or on social media. I would never say no; I love Masood,” Nitin admitted.
When asked why he thinks the character has attracted such a devoted fanbase, Nitin explained: “He’s a funny character, but he also has heart.
“With Masood, we reached a point where people from all walks of life—every class, African communities, Chinese communities—were saying, ‘I love you, Masood.'”
The actor joked that if he could spend time with Masood, he would offer him some important life advice.
He added, “He’s the kind of character I’d enjoy having a drink with, but I’d also tell him to take it easy with the women.”
Nitin’s latest film, Christmas Karma, is directed by Gurinder Chadha, best known for Bend It Like Beckham.
The festive movie stars Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), former EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Eva Longoria, Billy Porter, and Boy George.
