Emmerdale’s Charley Webb has revealed that she has been “sort of” diagnosed with autism and ADHD, four years after leaving the ITV soap.
The 37-year-old actress is best known for portraying fan-favourite Debbie Dingle on Emmerdale from 2002 to 2021.
She recently spoke about her diagnosis on the Girls Next Door podcast, explaining that she is still in the early stages of the process.
Charley said of ADHD:
“I’ve sort of just been diagnosed with that. I don’t want to confirm it fully because I’m only at the initial stages. More autism – autistic/ADHD. I’m like, ‘what?’. I’ve just started the process with doctors.”
She added:
“I think ADHD is such a big topic now, and perhaps everyone is on the spectrum to some degree – it just depends on how deeply you explore it.”

“But it does make sense in some ways, like why people might think I’m really cold,” Charley explained. “That could just be a bit of the autistic side of me, if it turns out to be true. I need to do a lot more investigations, but it doesn’t really surprise me. It’s quite interesting.”
Charley, who shares three children with her ex, Matthew Wolfenden (who played David Metcalfe on Emmerdale), added:
“It’s so important for people to understand themselves. I think as we get older, awareness is growing. Years ago, nobody talked about this. There were no conversations about ADHD or anything like that, but now it’s everywhere.”

“I think it’s really important to understand that,” Charley said. “For me, noise is a big trigger. I can go from zero to sixty in an instant. Being somewhere really busy with lots of loud sounds is overwhelming, so I’m keen to explore that further.”
“These things are part of you, aren’t they? They’re often genetic. With ADHD, for example, a child usually inherits it if one parent has it.”

According to the NHS website, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a condition in which the brain functions differently from most people.
“If you have ADHD, you might struggle with things like focusing or staying still. However, there are strategies and treatments that can help manage the symptoms.”
