General Hospital Spoilers reports that Maurice Benard is starting to openly reflect on the fact that his time as Sonny Corinthos may be limited. Say it isn’t true! Daytime’s iconic mob boss has been a central figure in Port Charles since 1993.
Fans have followed Sonny through it all — growing up, facing personal demons, struggling with mental health, enduring failed marriages, becoming a father, turning saintly at times, and even experiencing amnesia. Now, it seems the journey may be heading toward Sonny as a retired soap legend.
Benard recently spoke with Richard Taite on his podcast We’re Out of Time, and his remarks have left some viewers anxious about the possibility of losing Sonny in the coming years. Questions abound: what will happen to his character, his family, and “the business”?
Sonny’s Legendary Run
All good things eventually come to an end, yet fans may never feel truly ready to bid farewell to the charisma, depth, and drama Benard has brought to Sonny Corinthos.
A recast seems highly unlikely — it would neither honor the character nor the actor after more than 30 years of shaping Sonny into the iconic mobster we know today.
If Sonny were to step away tomorrow, the story might feel incomplete in terms of closure, but Benard has embodied the role so fully that the character would still feel authentic. Still, for longtime fans, it’s never quite enough time.
Who Could Take Over?
GH spoilers suggest only a few people could potentially inherit Sonny’s empire. Last year, when Sonny considered leaving “the business,” he was unsure who could take the reins — especially since Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) had recently become the primary caregiver for Danny Morgan (Asher Antonyzyn).
The question now looms: who in Port Charles is capable of stepping up if Sonny eventually retires?
He wasn’t ready to step into Sonny’s shoes before, but that could shift as Danny grows older and becomes more independent.
Perhaps Jason will take over as the new Sonny, with Danny stepping into Jason’s role. Or maybe an adversary such as Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota), Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), or Selina Wu (Lydia Look) could finally corner Sonny in a way that changes everything.
Of course, a definitive farewell is also possible — yes, Sonny could die. After all, the character has faced death before.
Mental Health and Michael’s Role
Benard told Taite that his mental health wouldn’t allow him to wait until age 75 to retire, noting that 65 is a more realistic target. Given his experiences managing Bipolar Disorder, Sonny’s eventual storyline might mirror this reality.
Will Sonny spiral, experience a breakdown, or confront suicidal thoughts? If he can no longer handle “the business,” it’s possible Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson) could step up to fill his father’s role.
Michael has been showing a darker, more ruthless side lately:
- He’s scheming against Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) to protect his children.
- He’s plotting revenge against Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison).
- While still loyal to his family, he isn’t afraid to take risks with someone like Jacinda Bracken (Paige Herschell).
In many ways, Michael is starting to mirror his father. If it turns out he did shoot Drew, the resemblance between father and son would be even clearer.
