A much-loved Coronation Street character may be preparing to bid farewell to the cobbles after being taken to hospital following a shocking fall in Monday’s episode.

An unexpected exit could be looming for one iconic Coronation Street character.

In Monday’s episode of the ITV soap, viewers saw several Weatherfield residents taking part in a speed dating night at The Rovers.

Meanwhile, Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) revealed she intended to influence the event so Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) could enjoy her first date with George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).

But before the romantic evening truly got underway, Jenny’s phone kept lighting up with calls from Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox). After ignoring the calls multiple times, she finally decided to answer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Rushing over to the group, Jenny revealed she needed to leave as Rita had suffered a fall. At the corner shop, Rita seemed okay as she spoke with Jenny, who confessed that her life wasn’t quite turning out as she had imagined.

Rita comforted her, saying: “You know Jenny, I’ll always look out for you.”

Jenny replied: “Yes, but I should be the one looking after you!”

As Rita suggested they could support each other, they headed upstairs for a cup of tea, though it soon became clear her injury was more serious than first thought.

Later in the episode, Jenny was seen in tears before George arrived with flowers for Rita. When asked what had happened, she explained: “We’ve just come back from the hospital. She thought it was only a minor ankle injury. She wasn’t expecting a scan, and the results were much worse than she anticipated.”

Initially, George asked about Rita’s scan results but then decided it was up to her to share the news.

He told Jenny he hoped Rita’s condition wasn’t as serious as someone he knew who found out they had stage four bowel cancer after visiting A&E for a broken leg.

Jenny comforted him, saying: “No, it’s not as bad as that.”

George replied: “It must be quite serious — I can see you’ve been crying. I know how much she means to you. It’s clearly hitting you hard.”

While Rita’s exact condition remains unknown, could this hint at a surprising exit after her long tenure on the cobbles?
