Strictly Come Dancing’s Katya Jones has responded to “cheating” claims after some viewers suggested she gave her partner a “secret signal” during the live show on Saturday (November 29).
The episode featured a new segment called the Instant Dance Challenge, in which celebrities were only told their dance style, song, and costume moments before performing.
With no time to prepare, the contestants had to change outfits quickly and then had just ten seconds to plan their routine once on the dance floor.
Katya, 36, and Emmerdale’s Lewis Cope, 30, faced a tough Jive. Yet, some viewers accused the pair of unfairly coordinating their routine beforehand, noting what appeared to be Katya demonstrating a move to Lewis while on the stairs.
Speaking about the incident on The One Show on Tuesday (December 2), alongside hosts Alex Jones, Lauren Laverne, and her dance partner Lewis, Katya addressed the controversy with a brief comment: “It was fate,” according to Wales Online.
When Alex asked about their experience with the Instant Dance Challenge, Lewis admitted: “For me, it was even more exciting than the main dance because anything could happen. It was brilliant TV and really fun.”
Katya added: “It had never been done on Strictly before, so none of us knew how it would go. It was fate—we didn’t know the song or the dance, so it was a bit chaotic. That night, Nikita [Kuzmin] and I were talking, and I realized I hadn’t felt such pure joy from dancing in a very long time.”
She went on: “It’s a huge credit to the celebrities who’ve been learning for weeks and were able to perform on the spot, matching us as equal partners. It was truly wonderful.”
In an emotional moment, Lewis admitted: “I wasn’t fully prepared for how much joy dancing would bring me—not just during the performance, but in the rest of my life.
“I honestly can’t imagine my life without dancing. It has completely transformed me and left me buzzing.”
